Jason Duval is the second playable protagonist of Grand Theft Auto VI — and in many ways Lucia’s opposite. She enters the story walking out of a prison gate with everything to prove; Jason is already deep inside Leonida’s criminal economy when the game begins. Rockstar sums him up in one line: he “wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder.”

From grifters to the Army — and back

Jason’s official backstory is a loop he can’t quite escape. He grew up surrounded by grifters and crooks, and joined the Army specifically to get away from a troubled youth. It didn’t take. By the time GTA VI opens, he’s washed up in the Leonida Keys doing the one kind of work he knows — running errands for local drug traffickers.

The Army detail matters beyond flavor. It’s the in-world explanation for why a “local criminal” handles weapons and vehicles like a professional, and it hints at the skill set players will have access to on his half of the story.

Life in the Keys

Jason’s home base is the Leonida Keys — the game’s take on the Florida Keys, the island chain trailing off the state’s southern tip. He lives rent-free in a property owned by Brian Heder, a veteran drug smuggler, and pays for the arrangement by helping Heder with shakedowns and odd jobs.

That setup makes Jason the player’s entry point into the smuggling world of southern Leonida: boats, back channels, and the kind of low-level muscle work that a bigger story tends to grow out of.

Jason and Lucia

Rockstar frames the relationship between Jason and Lucia as the emotional core of the game — a modern Bonnie-and-Clyde story playing out across Leonida. The official materials even hang the whole question of the plot on their meeting: it “could be the best or worst thing to ever happen to him.”

The duo’s dynamic splits cleanly. Lucia reads as the planner — the one calculating risks with everything to lose. Jason is the operator: already embedded, already connected, the one who knows which dock to use and which name to drop. How the game divides playtime between them — free switching in the style of GTA V, or story-driven handoffs — hasn’t been confirmed.
